Mariah Carey allegedly takes $1M for concert for Angolan President

Angolan president Jose Eduardo dos Santos didn’t have enough cash to pay Mariah Carey to always be his baby, but he was reportedly able to rustle up $1 million to get the 44-year-old singer to entertain him with a two-hour concert.

After the American pop star performed for Dos Santos on Sunday, human rights campaigners criticized Carey for taking money from the African dictator.

"It is the sad spectacle of an international artist purchased by a ruthless police state to entertain and whitewash the father-daughter kleptocracy that has amassed billions in ill-gotten wealth while the majority of Angola lives on less than $2 a day," said the president of the Human Rights Foundation, Thor Halvorssen.

Dos Santos, 71, has been president since September 1979. According to the HRF, Dos Santos has "exploited oil and diamond wealth to build total control over all branches of the government, the military, and the courts."

The dictator’s daughter, Isabel, organized the show via the Angolan Red Cross.

During the show, Carey reportedly told the audience: "I am happy to be here in this room, and I am honored to share this show with the president of Angola.”

Carey, who is allegedly worth more than half a billion dollars, also was criticized after she performed for Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi in 2008.
