President Obama and first lady depart for Nelson Mandela memorial service

The Obamas are en route to South Africa for the Tuesday memorial service of Nelson Mandela, who passed away last Thursday at the age of 95.

Dec. 9 (UPI) -- President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama are en route to Johannesburg, South Africa for the Tuesday memorial service of former South African President Nelson Mandela, who passed away last Thursday at the age of 95.

The Obamas departed Joint Base Andrews this morning at 8:20 a.m. EST to fly to South Africa for Tuesday's event.

They will be among a large gathering of world leaders. South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation released a long list of current world leaders who will be attending.

President Obama will also be joined by former U.S. Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter and their wives, as well as 26 U.S. Congressional members at the four-hour memorial service tomorrow.
