Dec. 4 (UPI)--Argentinian lawmakers are considering a proposal to issue a a commemorative coin featuring the face of Pope Francis, who was prior to his papal election the archbishop of Buenos Aries.

The goal, according to the proposed legislation, is “to commemorate an event of global dimensions, so our present and future generations remember this splendid act in the history of humanity, in which the principal actor is an Argentine."

Representative Oscar Cachi Martinez proposed the legislation in April. In late November, the measure passed Argentina's lower house. The proposal is now before the Senate.

If issued, the coin will bear the face of the pope along with an inscription that reads "Tribute from the Argentine People to Pope Francis."
