Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Monday's Google Doodle honors Opera star Maria Callas on what would have been her 90th birthday.

Time magazine once called the New York native the “undisputed queen of the world’s opera” and ”a woman for whom the term prima donna could have been invented.”

Callas, who grew up an overweight child, willed herself into a svelte and glamorous figure after a mid-career weight loss. This reportedly contributed to her vocal decline and the premature end of her on-stage career.

The soprano died of a heart attack in Paris in 1977.
