Hundreds of militants attacked an air force base between 3 and 4 a.m. local time. A lengthy firefight ensued between the attackers and the Nigerian Army which, according to Colonel Muhammad Dole, successfully repelled the aggression.
Earlier reports were that the international airport in Maiduguri had also been attacked. It is unclear whether that is indeed the case.
Casualty numbers of the pre-dawn attack have not yet been released by the military. However, residents reported that scores of people were killed, including some of the terrorists.
Boko Haram was deemed a "foreign terrorist organization" by the White House last month for its role in killing thousands in Nigeria.
