Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Two films -- both led by female characters -- dominated the box office over Thanksgiving weekend.

Catching Fire, the second installment to the juggernaut Hunger Games series, pulled in $110.2 million over five days, blowing past the $82 million record set by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone back in 2001. The weekend's success brings Catching Fire -- still only in its second week of release- to a $296 million domestic gross and whopping $573 million globally.

Disney's Frozen couldn't top Fire's jaw-dropping success, but it still topped Harry Potter and broke a few Thanksgiving day records of its own. The animated musical feature, voiced by Kristen Bell and Jonathan Groff, had the best-ever opening for a Thanksgiving weekend with $93 million. Frozen's numbers topped the $80 million mark set by Toy Story 2 back in 1999.

Both films were well-received by both critics and audiences. CinemaScore, which measures moviegoers reactions, gave Catching Fire an A rating, while Frozen received a rare A+ rating.

Thor: The Dark World and The Best Man Holiday, both sequels, came in at third and fourth respectively.
