The 23-year-old daughter of Kennedy's eldest child, Caroline Kennedy, spoke solemnly of her grandfather's legacy Friday at a small ceremony at the site of the memorial, which was unveiled in 1965, the New York Daily News reported.
"For me, my grandfather lives in my imagination, in his words, and in the lessons he has left us," Schlossberg said. "Throughout my life, I have been able to connect with him through the study of history.
"Today is a difficult day because it is a reminder of a moment of profound sadness for my family, for America, and for the world."
The memorial, which includes a quote from Kennedy's inaugural address, is located in Runnymeade Meadow overlooking the site of the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215.
Schlossberg read aloud the quote at the ceremony.
“Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty,” the stone reads.
