(UPI) -- "Why is America so robo-phobic?" Samuel L. Jackson, in character as a corporate shill, asks in the latest trailer for Sony's 2014 Robocop remake.

The new film, based on the 1987 sci-fi classic, takes place in a crime-ridden Detroit in 2028. When an honest and hard-working police officer, played by The Killing's Joel Kinnaman, is critically injured in an accident, the Omnicorp organization uses his body to create a part-human, part-robot police officer.

But as the synopsis explains, Omnicorp "never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine pursuing justice."

Director Jose Padilha said back in July that modern-day drone warfare inspired the film's philosophical message.

"We are more and more in a country where Robocop is relevant. You will see robots in wars," he said. "The first film saw it way back then. Now we have more knowledge and we know it's coming true. First we are going to use machines abroad, then we are going to use machines at home."

Robocop hits theaters Feb. 12, 2014.
