Coaches told Richie Incognito to toughen up Jonathan Martin, reports say

(UPI) -- As Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Richie Incognito is investigated for sending teammate Jonathan Martin threatening messages, it has come into question whether the coaching staff knew about the confrontation.

A new report says that not only did the coaching staff know what was going on between Incognito and Martin, they also encouraged Incognito to "toughen up" Martin by making a call that would "get him into the fold," one source said.

At the time, Martin was a rookie and had missed voluntary workouts. As the leader of the offensive line, Incognito may have taken the suggestion well beyond its original intent.

Incognito is accused of using racially charged language and threats against Martin through text messages and voicemails.

It is not yet known whether the coaches' involvement will be part of a pending investigation of the Miami Dolphins' locker room environment, including Incognito's alleged bullying.

Incognito said he plans to wait it out, and hopes to be able to play in the NFL again. He has been suspended indefinitely from the Dolphins, and sources have said he will never play again for the team.

"I'm just trying to weather the storm right now. This will pass," Incognito said.
