(UPI) -- Every year, a cluster Halloween partygoers learn the hard way what is and is not offensive to others. Julianne Hough apologized for donning blackface, while Michigan's Alicia Ann Lynch received death threats for dressing like an Boston Marathon runner.
Across the pond, a couple of University of Chester students made the front page of The Sun Wednesday after winning a nightclub Halloween costume contest dressed as the Twin Towers on September 11.
Amber Langford and Annie Collinge, both 19, dressed as cardboard versions of the North Tower and South Tower, adorned with burning flames, planes and people jumping out of buildings, The Sun reported Wednesday.
The University of Chester and the Chester Students' Union said in a statement that they "utterly condemned" the actions of the girls, who each won £150 in gift certificates from the nightclub.
"We never meant to be offensive, but we apologize if any offense was caused," the teens said in a statement. "The idea was to depict a serious, modern-day horror that happened in our lifetime and was not intended as a joke."
Langford's father, a pilot, said he didn't know anything about his daughter's costume idea.
"I'm not happy at all," he told The Sun. "She knows I'm a pilot and that's not cool at all. We will be having a little chat, I think."
