(UPI) -- Janelle Monae stepped onto Saturday Night Live's stage over the weekend to perform two longs of her sophomore album, The Electric Lady, which debuted last month to mediocre sales. But the 27-year-old Kansas City native is famed for her committed life performances.

Wearing her usual black and white, Monae sang "Dance Apocalyptic" and "Electric Lady" with a large backing band and two backing vocalists.
