(UPI) -- Alfonso Cuaron's space thriller Gravity spent three weeks at the top of the American box office, generating rave reviews and Oscar buzz. But a decidedly more lowbrow film dominated this weekend's box office -- Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa -- in which Johnny Knoxville dresses up like a senior citizen and pranks unsuspecting Americans.

Paramount made Bad Grandpa on a $15 million budget, but the film earned $32 million in its first weekend. The film performed better than previous Jackass films Jackass: The Movie ($22.8 million) and Jackass: Number Two ($29 million), but not as well as its predecessor Jackass 3-D ($50 million).

Despite falling from its No. 1 position, Gravity held strong at No. 2 with $20.3 million, followed by Captain Phillips with $11.8 million.
