Patterson, 24, was last seen on Saturday and, although there are conflicting reports about her last exact whereabouts, her body was recovered after being dumped in a desert.
In a statement on Qatar’s Ministry of Interior website, officials said: “The police has arrested the suspects of a European woman's murder. The case has been referred to Public Prosecution to complete further judicial procedures applicable in this regard.”
Patterson’s mother, 48-year-old Alison Patterson, said her daughter was enjoying her time working in Qatar as a primary school teacher at the Newton British School.
“Lauren was a wonderful young woman having the time of her life. There have been so many people that have put to us how highly they thought of Lauren and loved her,” she said.
The young woman’s boyfriend, James Grima, embarked on a frantic social media campaign to find Patterson after she went missing.
He posted the following statements on Facebook:
“I can’t believe that it had to end this way Lauren, I really don’t. I was so happy that I had finally found someone that could change my life so much, and in such a positive way too... Rest In Peace babe ... I will always look up at the sky cause you always were the brightest star and always will be.”
“I love you so much babe, I really do and I can’t get over the fact that you were taken away so cruelly, it really breaks my heart to think about it. I know you’re watching over us, wherever you are, and I know that I will meet you again one day.”
