(UPI) -- Shayanna Jenkins pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a perjury charge connected to the murder case against former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez.
Jenkins was arraigned in Fall River Superior Court and is due to return for a pre-trial hearing set for November 6. She was indicted because of testimony she gave to a Bristol County grand jury hearing evidence about Hernandez, her boyfriend.
Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the death of Odin Lloyd, a 27-year-old semi-pro football player from Boston. Lloyd was dating Jenkins's sister prior to his death.
Jenkins and Hernandez have a young child together.
Defense attorney Janice Bassil said that Jenkins and Hernandez shared only certain parts of their lives with one another. “Their relationship, in many ways, had elements of what I refer to as ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell,’” Bassil said.
Bristol County Assistant District Attorney Patrick Bomberg said that Jenkins disposed of evidence from the home she shares with Hernandez after Lloyd's murder. According to Bomberg, Jenkins collected a box from the basement of the couple’s home in North Attleborough, Mass., and then tossed the box in a dumpster.
When a grand jury questioned her about her actions, Jenkins testified she had no memory of where she went or where she got rid of the box.
“She told the grand jury she dumped it in a dumpster, but she couldn’t tell anybody where it was,’’ Bomberg said.
