6.4 earthquake rattles Greece

(UPI) -- The Greek island of Crete was hit by a 6.4 magnitude-earthquake Saturday afternoon, causing minor damage but no reported casualties.

The quake, which hit west of the Aegean island around 4 p.m. local time, and was occurred at a depth of 22.5 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It could be felt throughout Greece, even in Athens, approximately 175 miles away from the earthquake's epicenter.

The area near Crete is one known for seismic activity, and researchers said they would be looking out to see if Saturday's trembler could be foretell something more.

"We will be closely following developments over the next hours and days before we determine whether this is the main quake," said Philippos Vallianatos, professor of geophysics at Crete University. Aftershocks between 3.3 and 4.1 on the Richter scale had already been recorded.
