(UPI) -- A recently auctioned painting by Norman Rockwell was reportedly stolen from a storage unit in New York last month, and police are on the hunt for the thief.

Rockwell's "Sport," which was sold in May for more than $1 million, disappeared from a Queens warehouse sometime last month. It was discovered missing from the Welpak Art Moving and Storage Facility on September 13.

The painting was used as a cover of the The Saturday Evening Post on April 23, 1939, and was sold on May 22 for $1,085,000 at Sotheby's to an anonymous buyer. It is about 22 inches by 28 inches, oil on canvas, and framed in gold-colored wood.

Jonathan Stuart, son of Rockwell's longtime art director at the Saturday Evening Post, said he was unsure how the thieves planned to profit from stealing such a high-profile piece.

“How are they going to sell something that was just publicly sold for $1 million?” he said. “If someone came to me with that, I’d call Sotheby’s or the police.”
