Instead of tipping for her service, the customer had written "none" in the tip section and the N-word in the total section. But not everyone was supportive of her ordeal.
Red Lobster suspended Jenkins over a company policy which prevents employees from posting receipts online, while some online commenters wondered whether Jenkins had made it all up.
But in the month since her receipt went viral, a sympathetic California resident named Matthew Hanson managed to raise $10,749 online for the hard-working college student.
Hanson, the founder of AddictingInfo.org, said he organized "Tips for Toni" because he "wanted to send a clear message that people are disgusted by racism and people won’t tolerate that behavior."
"I literally screamed. I was so confused,” Jenkins told ABC News. “I was just so thankful. I felt so blessed and so honored that so many people came together on my behalf to give this to me.”
“We are disgusted by the language used on this guest check and it has no place in our restaurant or anywhere else,” Red Lobster said in a statement. “We were in constant communication with [our server] throughout this situation and have extended her a high degree of respect and caring for what happened. No one should have to endure what our employee went through.”
Jenkins told the New York Daily News that she's back at work at Red Lobster and has spent the money on a pre-owned 2005 Toyota Camry.
"What I can say to kids my age is be careful what you put on your social media site," she said. "I guess the people who share it, they share it very fast. So be ready. It (going viral) will happen overnight and take you by surprise."
The customer who allegedly wrote the remark has hired an attorney and vehemently denied Jenkins' claim, according to WSMV.
“I do not approve of the use of that type of talk, not now or ever," she said.
