The woman was contracted to work at Grand Rapids Public Schools through West Michigan Janitorial Service and was at Campus Elementary when the lunchtime incident occurred. A bystander reported what happened to school officials and the woman admitted what she had done when they confronted her.
“It is absolutely unacceptable in any way, shape or form for an employee to behave in this manner,” spokesman John Helmholdt said. “There are consequences, and this individual learned quick the hard way.”
The woman had passed a district background check, according to officials.
Helmholdt didn’t confirm what insults had been hurled at the woman, but he did say they contained a “curse word and unflattering comments.”
It’s a surprising situation to say the least.
"I didn't believe it. Who would believe something like that?" said the mother of the intended victim. "To think that there's an adult that can be so like twisted to sit there and watch a little boy -- a little 9-year-old boy -- get beat up, and get enjoyment out of it."
The district hasn’t confirmed that the intended target was actually injured.
“At this point, we do not have any reports that substantiate that,” Helmholdt said. “But it’s still an ongoing investigation.”
