Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Las Vegas tattoo artist Joey "Hollywood" Hamilton was crowned the victor of Season 3 of Spike TV's "Ink Master," thanks to a strong season and an impressive master design for the finale.

The Season 3 champ beat out Miami-based Katherine "Tatu Baby" Flores and Jime Litwalk, of Orlando, for the big prize Tuesday.

Hamilton, who describes his style as "photorealistic," found himself avoiding any huge flubs all season long, managing to stay out of the bottom during judging each week, and it paid off.

The stakes are high for the artists competing for the Ink Master title, $100,000 and a spread in "Inked" magazine -- as well as for their human canvases, who get to reap the benefits of a great competitor's work, but must also live with their errors.

Hamilton also walked away victor in the fan vote, where the online audience gets to choose the artist who produces their favorite tattoos, and will spend several days as a guest artist at the studios of "Ink Master" hosts Oliver Peck and Chris Nunez.

For the finale, the remaining contestants were sent to their home studios to complete a 35-hour, 5-session masterpiece. Hamilton designed an underwater scene featuring a mermaid, coral and a turtle stretching from his canvas's hip down past her knee.

Hamilton said he was relieved the judges didn't seem to notice some rough healing on the main body of the mermaid -- his canvas, Briana, got a new job that forced her to wear pants the day after the session, forcing him to spend the final two days going over it -- but wished they saw some of the cleverer aspects of the design.

He pointed out one in particular: the placement of the mermaid's tail means it moves when Briana walks.
