LG has announced the beginning of mass-production on a curved, flexible display, aiming to compete with Samsung and possible break into the wearable device market.

The Korean manufacturer described the display as "the world's first flexible OLED panel for smartphones," but denied rumors of a phone sporting the new display launching as early as next month.

LG Display's Chief Technology Officer Yeo Sang-Deog said LG plans to release "new products with enhanced performance and differentiated designs next year." Samsung has already confirmed a curved smartphone, slated for October.

LG's six-inch display will be curved lengthwise, top to bottom, unlike a recent Samsung prototype which was concave side-to-side, with each long side curved back.

Though LG did not specify a resolution for the new screen, the company said the OLED display panel will have a 700mm radius of curvature -- more than twice the curve of Samsung's Galaxy Nexus.
