Miley Cyrus explains it all in MTV doc 'Miley: The Movement'

"I don't apologize for anything," Miley Cyrus says in a new MTV documentary -- a look inside the life of the young singer currently dominating our pop cultural discourse.

In "Miley: The Movement," set to air Wednesday, the 20-year-old opens up about her year-long transformation into a sexually provocative singer with a new look and a new attitude, a far cry from her days as teen queen Hannah Montana.

It all started with the drastic haircut that sent shockwaves through social media, Cyrus told filmmaker Paul Bozymowski.

"I told my hairstylist, shave my head, dye me blonde," she said. "I need to let go of like a past in a way because I felt like we need to see change. I felt like I had this whole new attitude.

"I felt like I could finally be the bad b**** I really am. Even the way I dress has opened up," she said.

"I found her to be very savvy and smart ... Her sense of humor separates her from a lot of artists. That ability to not take yourself so seriously all the time really sets [her apart]," Bozymowski told People.

As for the VMAs performance that we're still talking about, Cyrus answers critics who called it a "hot mess."

"It's a strategic hot mess," she said of the twerk-filled performance that garnered its share of raised eyebrows. "If I wanted a raunchy sex show, I wouldn't have been dressed as a damned bear."

"How many times have you seen this play out in pop? Madonna's done it. Britney's done it."
