Virginia Tech football players may soon don helmets paying tribute to the so-called "hokie stone" limestone mined near the college's Blacksburg campus.

Virginia Tech's football team is getting ready to unveil a new style of helmet, and it's an interesting one.

The so-called "Hokie Stone" helmet, still in its beginning stages, would have a pattern mimicking the limestone rock that appears all over buildings at the Blacksburg school's campus and mined nearby.

"It's not flashy, but it means a tremendous amount to this university," coach Frank Beamer said in a statement. "… The reason I like it, is because it represents what this program and this university are built on. Each piece, in its place, serving its purpose, doing its job, and when it's all working together, it's rock solid and it's something special."

The helmets won't be showing up on the field anytime soon, though -- the design is still in its preliminary stages.
