Sara Bareilles doesn't mind 'Roar' comparison

Just to be clear, Sara Bareilles doesn't think her song "Brave" was ripped of by Katy Perry's "Roar."

Instead, Bareilles said the comparisons have been good for sales.

"I was stoked. I was like, 'Great,'" Bareilles said. "I was like, 'You guys want to go get [mad] about something and buy my music, that's great.'"

Bareilles's song, "Brave" was released back in April as the first single from "The Blessed Unrest," which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 200.

"Brave" initially peaked at No. 61, but after "Roar" was released in August, widespread comparisons between the tracks ignited interest in Bareilles's track, and the song shot up the charts to No. 31.

"I don't feel like anything was taken from me artistically," Bareilles said. "I wasn't the one having any problems with it," she said. "I've known Katy a long time. We are friends, and she and I spoke about it. I look at it as two female artists who are releasing a message of empowerment."

"We actually talked about it. We're like, 'Should we just work on a mash-up and let everybody know we're not mad at each other?'"

Fans have actually beaten them to it -- while a search for "Brave Roar mashup" turns up several options, the best may be this one from Tumblr user portkey, who just layered the two songs together and lined them up, beat for beat.

"To be totally honest, I was sort of disappointed in how aggressive fans were being about it," Bareilles said. "I don't promote drama in my life and competition and stuff like that."

In fact, before Perry even released "Roar," she tweeted a link to the video of "Brave." And after the controversy broke, Bareilles tweeted a simple message of "All love, everybody."
