Egypt extends state of emergency for two months

Egypt announced Thursday it would extend its state of emergency, declared August 14, for an additional two months.

The office of interim president Adly Mansour did not indicate whether the overnight curfews previously imposed in 14 governorates would be lifted.

"The curfew in the 14 governorates will be reviewed according to the state of security in each location," a government source told Ahram. "However the curfew might shorten to midnight until 5 a.m. with the start of the school year on September 21."

The curfew is currently in place from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. except Fridays, when the curfew starts at 7 p.m.

The state of emergency was declared after the violent dispersal of protestors supporting ousted president Mohamed Morsi in Cairo which left hundreds dead.

Clashes between pro- and anti-Muslim Brotherhood Egyptians have continued to escalate. Last week, Egyptian Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim survived an assassination attempt in Cairo.
