Herrera Beutler gave birth to her daughter Abigail in July, three months before the baby's due date. Abigail was born with a condition called Potter's Syndrome, meaning she was born without functioning lungs or kidneys.
Experimental treatments helped Abigail beat the odds, keeping her alive and allowing her lungs to develop, but the difficult treatment has kept Herrera Beutler at her daughter's California hospital bedside most of the time.
She'll resume full congressional duties once Abigail is healthy enough to go home, but until then, Herrera Beutler will only travel to D.C. for key votes -- such as the decision to grant President Obama approval to strike Syria over its use of chemical weapons.
“We hope to come home with Abigail as soon as possible, but the truth is we don’t know precisely when that will be,” Herrera Beutler said in a statement.
