Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Lucas County Coroner Dr. James Patrick confirmed Thursday that a cardbox containing "apparent human remains" was removed from a home where a missing toddler, Elaina Steinfurth, was last seen in June.

An autopsy of the remains is scheduled for Friday morning.

The box in question was recovered from inside a detached garage in the residence where Steven King, the ex-boyfriend of Elaina's mother, Angela Steinfurth, used to live. The house had previously been searched by Toledo Police and federal officials several times.

The home where the remains were found, 704 Federal Street in east Toledo, is also feet away from where multiple vigils have been held for Baby Elaine's return over the past three months.

News of the remains came a few hours after King appeared in court on an obstruction of justice charge in connection to Elaina's disappearance. The girl's mother, Angela Steinfurth, is also facing the charge.

Baby Elaina's father T.J. Steinfurth said Thursday the discoveries made him "irate" and that "it's hard to stay optimistic" given the circumstances.

According to Patrick, it might take several weeks to definitely determine the identity of the remains. He said his office might be able to speed up the process with help from the state.

Toledo Police have scheduled a live press conference Friday at 10:30 a.m. on WNWO and northwestohio.com to discuss the latest developments in the case.
