The film's director Paul Schrader told reporters that her absence made him "a free man."
“For the last 16 months I’ve been held hostage, by my own choosing, to a very talented but unpredictable actress,” Schrader said before the film’s Venice premiere. “She was supposed to be here today. She said she would be, but she is not.”
But while Schrader offered no explanation for Lohan's no-show, a source close to the 27-year-old star claimed she never committed to appear.
“She wanted to come, but for reasons out of her control it did not work out,” the rep told ABC News.
"The Canyons" is a sexual thriller that stars Lohan opposite to porn star James Deen. The film premiered in the U.S. on August 2.
