Ball State University student Markus Burden was selected at random during a Freshman Week event to take four attempts at the half-court shot, and on his fourth try, hit the incredible shot for a free spring semester.

The Indiana school has been running the promotion for several years, but Burden's $11,000 shot made him the first ever to win free tuition.

"It hasn't sunk in yet," said 18-year-old Burden. "I'm still very excited about it."

Burden didn't play on his high school basketball team in Frankfurt, Illinois, but he took a running start, and when the ball swished, the crowd roared as they would for any basketball star.

"I play in the rec center," Burden said. "I'm still surprised that I hit the shot." Burden says he is paying tuition without any financial aid. A free spring semester might mean an excellent first-year spring break.
