Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Dundee police are currently investigating the death of a 3-year-old boy who shot himself in the head after finding a gun in a bedroom closet.

The incident took place on Sunday after 4 p.m. in the 300 block of Rawson Street in Dundee, Mich. as Damon Holbrook, 3, found a gun owned by family friend Joshua Michael Greenhill who was living with the Holbrook family. Three other children were inside the house at the time.

Officers claim that Greenhill, 30, had left the gun inside a case on the floor of the closet. The firearm was loaded, had a bullet in the chamber and the case was not locked.

Authorities told WXYZ by the time they got to the scene, volunteer firefighters were already working on Damon. He was eventually rushed to St. Joseph Hospital in Ann Arbor and pronounced dead at 5:30 p.m.

Greenhill was arraigned Monday in Monroe County District Court before Judge Terrence Bronson where he was charged with careless discharge of a firearms causing injury or death. In addition to facing prison time, he will have to pay a fine of $2,000.

He was released on a personal recognizance bond that has several conditions and will be given a court-ordered appointed attorney.

Damon's father Brian Holbrook, a second amendment supporter and a friend of Greenhil's, urged people about gun safety in a Facebook post.

"Yesterday I lost my 3yrd son to a gun accident. We r all hoping to wake up from this nightmare. Though we know that it is now a living nightmare. My baby boy is gone & I will never get to hold him again. I will miss him terribly," he wrote. "I have nothing wrong with guns it's [what] this country was built on. I will still support the Second Amendment. All I ask is that everyone please, please safety first lock it up and put it out of reach of anyone that has no business being around a gun especially kids."
