Alex Rodriguez hit his first home run for the Yankees since he returned last week from offseason hip surgery and being suspended for 211 games for performance-enhancing drug use.

A-Rod started at third base and batted fourth just one day after being held out of the lineup.

He hit Justin Verlander's second pitch of the second inning Sunday, earning his 648th career home run. He is now 12 runs away from tying Willie Mays on the all-time list. If he does tie Mays, he will get a $6 million bonus.

Rodriguez is playing while he appeals the ban that Major League Baseball imposed on him following the investigation into a performance-enhancing drug scandal in a now-closed Florida clinic.
