British scientists have developed a new superfood broccoli that reportedly helps fight aging.

The vegetable, which is being sold under the brand name 'Beneforte' contains high levels of a plant compound believed to protect against heart disease and cancer, according to Sky News.

Volunteers who tested the broccoli allegedly experienced metabolic changes as their mitochondria -- living cells' "power plants" -- saw an improvement in performance. In addition, Professor Richard Mithen's team at the Institute of Food Research claimed eating the broccoli helped reverse mitochondrial malfunctions which could lead to obesity, diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer.

Scientists created the superfood by crossing a traditional strand of broccoli with a wild Italian variety that naturally has three times the levels of glucoraphanin than regular broccoli.

The study's findings, which were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, stress the benefits of a diet rich in cruciferous vegetables in general adding that Beneforte had the most notorious effect.

"A diet rich in cruciferous vegetables effectively retunes our metabolism.. In this manner, cruciferous vegetables may be able to reduce the risk of many chronic diseases associated with aging," reads the study's conclusion.
