Center College may be small -- only 1,375 students attend -- but nothing levels the playing field like $250 million.

The Danville, Ky., school just received the largest-ever donation to a liberal arts college in the United States, from the A. Eugene Brockman Charitable Trust. Brockman's son only attended the school for two years, but it must have left a big impression on the family.

The $250 million donation, which doubles the school's $230 million endowment, ranks among the largest gifts to education institutions in the world. Mayor Michael Bloomberg donated $350 million to Johns Hopkins earlier this year.

“This gift makes a fundamental transformation in Centre College’s ability to support students whose hard work, character and intellect have demonstrated their potential for leadership,” Centre College President John Roush said in a statement.

Centre College, which hosted vice-presidential debates in 2000 and 2012, will use the money to fund 40 full-ride scholarships to students majoring in science, math and economics.

Eugene Brockman died in 1986, but his son, Bob, did not attend the announcement. Roush called him “understated, but incredibly effective, hard-working and successful."
