Julianna Marguiles' "Good Wife" character was inspired by Silda Spitzer's 2008 television appearance beside her husband, then-Gov. Eliot Spitzer, prompting the show's writers to wonder about the women behind disgraced and unfaithful politicians. Most recently, Huma Abedin looked wan and uncomfortable at her press conference with husband Anthony Weiner, who had been caught sexting again, even after an extensive public rehabilitation campaign.

Many who saw the presser wondered why Abedin, a powerful and successful figure in her own right, would stick by a man who had publicly humiliated her multiple times.

Marguiles, who plays her own version of a "good wife" on the popular drama, said its unfair to judge Abedin's decision to stand by her husband -- literally.

"Every woman has to do what feels best for her in that moment," she said. "And I don't think anyone in that moment knows what the best situation to do is. I think it's called survival."

Watching Huma [Abedin] on the podium, standing there next to her husband and saying she was going to stand by her man, I only had compassion and empathy for her, and felt like none of us know what she's going to do yet. … That being said, I also really understand Silda Spitzer filing for divorce. I mean, you just don't know what you're going to do unless you're in their shoes.
