Many who saw the presser wondered why Abedin, a powerful and successful figure in her own right, would stick by a man who had publicly humiliated her multiple times.
Marguiles, who plays her own version of a "good wife" on the popular drama, said its unfair to judge Abedin's decision to stand by her husband -- literally.
"Every woman has to do what feels best for her in that moment," she said. "And I don't think anyone in that moment knows what the best situation to do is. I think it's called survival."
Watching Huma [Abedin] on the podium, standing there next to her husband and saying she was going to stand by her man, I only had compassion and empathy for her, and felt like none of us know what she's going to do yet. … That being said, I also really understand Silda Spitzer filing for divorce. I mean, you just don't know what you're going to do unless you're in their shoes.
"The Good Wife" returns for a fifth season on September 29.
