The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed their first child, a boy, at 4:24 p.m. (local time) Monday.
The 8lbs 6oz baby boy is the first person to hold the Prince of Cambridge title and is the third person in line to the British throne. He is Prince Charles' first grandchild and Queen Elizabeth's third great grandchild.
Early Monday morning it was announced that Kate Middleton was in the beginning stages of labor at the Lindo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital in London. According to a representative for the royal couple, labor was not induced and "[progressed] as normal."
Officials said the Duchess of Cambridge would stay in the hospital overnight and that the baby's name would be announced in due course.
"Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well," read an official announcement.
British bookmakers favor the names James and George.
