July 18 (UPI) -- "American Horror Story: Asylum" led the 2013 Emmy nominations with 17, followed closely by "Game of Thrones" with 16, announced Thursday.

Netflix-exclusive series "House of Cards" made Emmy history, with an Outstanding Drama nomination, becoming the first online-only program to play for one of the big awards. "Arrested Development," also on Netflix, got three nominations, but not one for best comedy series.

"Horror Story" led the pack, grabbing nominations for the Outstanding Miniseries or Movie, Lead Actress, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie nods.

"Game of Thrones" had the second-strongest showing, with 16 nominations, including those for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Writing, Supporting Actor and Actress, and Guest Actress.

With 15 nominations, "Saturday Night Live" was the most-nominated comedy, followed by "30 Rock," which earned 13 nods for its final season.

"House of Cards" and "Game of Thrones" were joined by "Breaking Bad," "Downton Abbey," "Homeland" and "Mad Men" to compete for the top drama award, continuing a streak of cable television dominance over the networks.

"The Big Bang Theory," "Girls," "Louie," "Modern Family," "30 Rock" and "Veep" will compete for the Outstanding Comedy title.

Thursday's nominations announcements were read by "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris, who will host the Emmy Awards ceremony, and "Breaking Bad" actor Aaron Paul. Both are nominated -- Harris, for his Tony Awards hosting stint, and Paul for supporting actor.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Emmy ceremony will take place on September 22, and air on CBS.
