The first batch of Twinkies is set to hit the shelves of 1,600 Walmart stores Friday, three days ahead of the national rollout.
By Sunday, Twinkies will be available in 3,000 Walmarts. The chain retailer is selling the treats in an exclusive collectible box that says "First Batch" on the packaging, alongside the snack cake's new tagline: "The Sweetest Comeback in the History of Ever."
“These are the first production of Twinkies since production restarted,” Marshall said. “Each box that arrived to us contains fresh Twinkies and not frozen ones.”
Walmart said they would start selling Twinkies on Monday, but changed the date when stores were able to “get the inventory earlier,” said Walmart company spokeswoman Veronica Marshall.
This time around, the snacks will last even longer -- Twinkies now have a shelf life of 45 days, which is three weeks longer than the 26 days the company had previously listed.
Other beloved Hostess snacks are on the horizon, as the new snack company reintroduces Hostess' HoHos, Zingers and Suzy Q in late August. Sno Balls are to follow in late fall.
The products have been out of production since November, when Hostess Brands Inc. filed for bankruptcy after years of management issues and a standoff with its second-biggest union.
The new company, Hostess Brands LLC, was bought out of bankruptcy for $410 million by Apollo Global Management. Apollo is known for fixing faltering brands and then re-selling them.
