July 11 (UPI) -- Idris Elba may be busy promoting his new robots and aliens flick, "Pacific Rim," but he took some time to remember his much-loved BBC series, "Luther," whose third series is airing in Britain this month.

Elba and "Luther" creator Neil Cross have big plans for the detective show: They're hoping for a feature film.

"It’s our engine at the moment," Elba said. "Neil wants to make it and so do I, and we are hopefully making steps towards that. It’s a long process.”

Elba said they hoped a movie would help explore why the titular Detective Chief Inspector John Luther is so dark and burdened.

"I think we probably go back to the beginning and start from an origin story,” Elba explained.

An origin story likely means Ruth Wilson's Alice Morgan, a killer who Elba meets in the first series and becomes his confidante, would have to sit the movie out.

Still, rabid "Luther" fans will be glad for opportunity for the gifted, but still somewhat unknown Elba to dig into a deeper role for a broader audience.

The third season of "Luther" premieres on BBC America on September 3.
