At least seven people are dead Friday after a man went on a violent spree near Santa Monica College earlier in the day.
The man believed to be the suspect was shot and killed on the scene, Santa Monica police confirmed at a press conference Friday afternoon.
An additional suspect is in custody, and police said they are working to determine if the second person worked with the suspect who was killed.
Three female victims were treated at UCLA Medical Center, including the one who died. One of the others was in surgery and a third in good condition, medical center spokesman Dr. Marshall Morgan said.
Three female victims taken to UCLA-Santa Monica Medical center were listed in good condition.
Witnesses said a man got out of a car, shot people inside a house and then set fire to the house. Santa Monica Fire Department officials said the bodies of two men were found inside the home.
Witnesses described seeing the man leave the house, shoot a woman in her car. He then possibly forced a woman to drive him to the college campus, then abandoned the car, firing at a bus north of the college campus. Then, he moved south across campus toward the library, shooting.
Police engaged the gunman in the library, and when he refused to put down his weapon, shot and killed him.
The gunman was believed to be wearing body armor and carrying a long black gun, multiple witnesses reported.
Twitter user Bobby de Janeiro (@Seaba5s), who was on campus during the shooting, snapped a photo of the man identified by police as the shooter, dead.
