Richard Ramirez was a serial killer whose M. O. was to break in and murder people in their California homes in the 1980s.
Ramirez, 53, was on death row at San Quentin. He died of natural causes in Marin General Hospital.
During his killing spree, he sexually assaulted and murdered at least 13 residents of southern California. Ramirez shot most of his victims, but a select few were found strangled or with their throats slit. He left a spray-painted Satanist pentagon on the walls of some of their homes.
On Sept. 20, 1989, Ramirez was convicted for 13 slayings. In October 1989, the jury voted for the death penalty.
Before they caught Ramirez, gun sales soared in Los Angeles County, as did purchase of locks and window bars.
