Doctor Tiller killer to face new intimidation charges over call from prison

By VERONICA LINARES, UPI.com

A Kansas prison inmate who is currently serving a "Hard 50" life sentence for killing abortion doctor George Tiller in 2009, could face new intimidation charges after he was allegedly recorded discussing the prospect of shooting officials of a Wichita abortion clinic.

A spokesman for the Kansas Department of Corrections said Monday that Scott Roeder had violated a prison rule against making threats and that they're looking to charge him for his violation.

Last month, Dave Leach -- a Des Moines abortion opponent -- uploaded a clip on YouTube of a conversation he reportedly had with Roeder about the reopening of Tiller's abortion clinic.

During the call, Leach can be heard saying that it would be "a blessing for the babies" if the new staff members at the clinic were to get shot. A second man, who's been identified by authorities as Roedner, at one point says that reopening the clinic is "almost like putting a target on your back."

Leach has publicly denied that the statements were threats. But prison spokesman Jeremy Barclay said Roeder should be punished for violating a regulation against threatening or intimidating any person from prison.

Roeder and Leach are both associated with the militant wing of the anti-abortion movement. Roeder could not be reached for comment about the matter as officials do not allow him to talk to reporters.
