'Evil Elmo' street performer charged with extorting Girl Scouts

By KATE STANTON, UPI.com

A street performer named Dan Sandler, also known as Adam Sandler, was arrested last year during an anti-semitic rant while wearing an Elmo costume in Times Square.

So-called "Evil Elmo" is back to no good, according to District Attorney Cyrus Vance, who announced in a press release Wednesday that Sandler had been indicted for attempting to extort $2 million from the Girl Scouts.

According to the New York Daily News, the 49-year-old Sandler worked as a temp for the organization several years ago, but started to send staff members "bizarre" emails in 2012.

"If I go the controversial route I will probably publish fictitious content about the Girl Scouts. And name names….Like your name! Because you were my caring supervisor who now gives me the silence [sic] treatment," he allegedly wrote, according to the New York Post.

Police arrested Sandler in San Francisco on Tuesday.

“I want to continue doing my Elmo gig because I make a lot of money. I want to do that the rest of my life. I should have gone to law school instead of doing the e-learning," he allegedly said on the flight back to New York.
