The two officials reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the incident, which took place in a basement at the Bello Campo mall. One of them was shot in the abdomen and leg and the other in the abdomen, according to the attending physician Dr. Carlos Pacheco.
The embassy's security unit reportedly went to the hospital and reached out to the officials' familes.
The State Department has not yet released the names of the officials, but Venezuelan newspaper El Universal, identified them as Roberto Ezequiel Rosas and Paul Marwin.
Rosas is reportedly undergoing exploratory surgery at the Centro Medico Docente La Trinidad.
Spokesman Patrick Ventrell said the employees may have belonged to other U.S. agencies, and not the State Department. He added that the establishment at which the incident occurred appeared to be "some sort of social spot."
