Marines with umbrellas protect Obama, Turkish PM from rain in 'extremely rare' sight

May 16 (UPI) -- The rain started pouring down when Barack Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a joint press conference in the Rose Garden of the White House on Thursday, prompting the president to ask marines to hold umbrellas out for them.

“I am going to go ahead and ask folks, why don’t we get a couple of Marines -- they’re going to look good next to us,” Obama joked. “I’ve got a change of suits, but I don’t know about our prime minister.”

"You guys I'm sorry about," Obama said to the press.

CNN got in touch with Marine Corps spokesman Capt. Greg Wolf. He explained that it's "extremely rare" to see marines in uniform holding umbrellas, as they're usually not permitted to do so -- unless their commander-in-chief asks them.
