May 16 (UPI) -- Bernie Madoff had to call collect for his interview with CNNMoney, because his prison phone account was out of money.

In an exclusive interview, the 75-year-old who orchestrated one of the nation's largest-ever Ponzi schemes said he now takes care of the computer and phone systems at Butner Federal Correctional Complex in North Carolina. Of course, the $40 per month job doesn't ease his worries.

"I'm usually up at 4:30 in the morning because I can't sleep," Madoff said of the anxiety about his family that keeps him up at night.

"I was responsible for my son Mark's death and that's very, very difficult," he said of Mark Madoff, who committed suicide in 2010. "I live with that. I live with the remorse, the pain I caused everybody, certainly my family, and the victims."

Madoff started the scheme after the the 1987 stock market crash, but never intended the scale of his deception to carry on so long.

"It was certainly never my intention for this to happen," said Madoff. "I thought I could work myself out of a temporary situation but it kept getting worse and worse and I didn't have the courage to admit what I had done. It created a major problem."

Madoff pled guilty to 11 federal felonies in 2009, including securities fraud, money laundering and perjury. He received the maximum sentence of 150 years in prison.
