Former Royals broadcaster Fred White died Wednesday from complications with melanoma, according to the Kansas City Star. He was 76.

White was known for his storied sports-broadcasting career, during which he spent 40 seasons with the Kansas City Royals as an announcer and later as Director of Broadcast Services and Royals Alumni.

He passed just one day after he announced his retirement from the Royals.

White was a sports anchor in Topeka and a broadcaster for Kansas State athletics before he joined the Royals, and during the offseason, he called basketball games for the television networks of the Big Eight and Big 12 conferences.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
