Student lectures teacher for being lazy in viral video

By KATE STANTON, UPI.com

Jeff Bliss, a student at Duncanville High School in Duncanville, Texas, made national headlines when a video of his classroom rant went viral. In the video, Bliss criticizes the teacher for handing students a packet of information, instead of teaching them "face-to-face."

You want kids to come into your class, you want them to get excited for this? You gotta come in here, you gotta make them excited. You want a kid to change and start doing better? You gotta touch his frickin’ heart.

"You've gotta take this job serious," Bliss continues.

"This is the future of this nation. When you come in here like you did last time and make a statement like, 'Oh this is my paycheck' -- indeed it is. But this is my country's future and my education," he adds.

NBC 5 in Dallas-Fort Worth reported Thursday that the student would face no disciplinary action for his outburst, but that the teacher had been placed on leave as part of procedure.

The school district released this statement about the incident:

As a district with a motto of engaging hearts and minds, we focus on building positive relationships with students and designing engaging work that is meaningful. We want our students and teachers to be engaged, but the method by which the student expressed his concern could have been handled in a more appropriate way.

But the school district's spokeswoman Tammy Kuykendall told Mashable in an email that Bliss had made a few good points.

"He makes a number of valid statements about how classrooms across America need to change and we view this as an opportunity to have more conversations about transforming our schools to better meet the needs of our students," she said.

Bliss told a local Fox station that his mom was proud of him, but thought he needed to change his attitude.
