Jeanne Cooper, known for her enduring role on "The Young and the Restless" as Katherine Chancellor, has died at 84, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Cooper started in the show's first season, which aired in 1973, when she was 45. She stayed on the soap for nearly 40 years and was nominated 10 times for a Daytime Emmy. She won a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.
Her son, Corbin Bernsen, had recently posted on Facebook that she was in the "final stages of life."
Cooper had been hospitalized intermittently since April. Neither her illness nor her cause of death have been disclosed.
Bernsen, also an actor, posted on his Facebook page at the time of her death.
"The Young and the Restless" is currently six weeks ahead of schedule, and it is unclear how CBS will handle her death within the show.
