May 6 (UPI) -- "Scarface" actor and former Los Angeles news anchor Mario Machado has died at age 78, according to the Los Angeles Times.

His daughter, Michelle, told the LA times that he died of pneumonia complications at a convalescent facility. He had suffered from Parkinson's disease for some time.

Machado was born in 1935 to a Chinese-Portuguese mother and a Portuguese father in Shanghai. In 1970 became Los Angeles' first Asian-American newscaster, according to the Utica Observer-Dispatch. He started as an on-air news reporter in 1967 and went on to win eight Emmy Awards.

His job led him to become a fictional news reporter in several films and television shows, including the "RoboCop" trilogy, "Oh, God!", "Rocky III," "Scarface" and "St. Elmo's Fire." In nearly all of his Hollywood roles, he played an interviewer or news anchor, and sometimes himself.
