Routledge Porn Studies academic journal is coming

May 3 (UPI) -- The Routledge academic journal "Porn Studies" will debut next spring, and the peer-reviewed periodical put out a call for papers this week, according to The Guardian.

Editors Feona Attwood and Clarissa Smith will accept papers from sociologists, criminologists, technologists and experts in cultural, media and gender studies for "the first dedicated, international, peer-reviewed journal to critically explore those cultural products and services designated as pornographic."

The editors note that "pornography studies are still in their infancy," despite the proliferation of porn on the internet. Some speculate that erotica's move into the mainstream with the "Twilight" series and "Fifty Shades of Grey" by E.L. James might have eased porn's entry into scholarly publishing.

Smith participated in an Intelligence Squared debate at the Royal Institution of Great Britain last week arguing for the motion that "Pornography is good for us," with feminist author Germaine Greer arguing against.

In her arguments, Smith said that "it's hard to think of any other industry" that is as universally condemned as pornography. She notes that the production of sexually explicit media isn't by just one entity, but "big studios and small operators" producing different types of pornography that can be found to have social, artistic, or other value.
